Children and Families Services

Young children with disabilities or special learning needs and their families can access support from STaR in various ways:

Childcare Placement and Support Program

Children who are enrolled in our flagship Childcare Placement and Support Program receive special education support in one of the mainstream childcare centres that is affiliated with us. Support in the transition to school is included.

There are currently 9 STaR-affiliated childcare centres in the following locations in Sydney: Beecroft, Epping, Top Ryde, West Ryde, Glenwood, Bidwill, Doonside, Rooty Hill and Seven Hills.

Outreach Program

STaR Outreach connects the expertise of the STaR team to community educational services and families of young children. We are experienced in working in a collaborative consultancy model in which the knowledge and skills of the family are recognised along with those of the professionals involved.

Children who are enrolled in childcare centres, preschools not affiliated with STaR and schools can access three Outreach components on a fee-for-service basis. The Australian Government’s Helping Children With Autism (HCWA) and Better Start for Children with Disability (Better Start) funding can be used for these components.

A trained special education teacher visits for 10 sessions and works with educators to develop and implement an individual education plan for the child’s development and inclusion. Agreement of the childcare centre, preschool or school is essential.

Outreach packages are:

For ages 0-5

For ages 5-8 (with the school’s agreement)

For ages 0-8

Consortium Services

STaR is the ‘lead agency’ for two multi-disciplinary consortiums approved to provide educational and therapy services funded by the Australian Government.

Families can access services in speech pathology, psychological testing and social work from a consortium of professionals through STaR. The Australian Government’s Helping Children With Autism (HCWA) and Better Start for Children with Disability (Better Start) funding can be used for these services.
